A Domain Name that Sells

Domain registration is the first and most important step in setting up your online presence. If you’re registering a domain name for your own personal use, or if you are in the process of becoming the next great web entrepreneur this is where the process begins. This domain name or name(s) will be your brand, or what your visitors will remember you by. Your domain name must be easy to remember, easy to spell, and tells the visitor what your website is about. A good name in itself will help your visitors find you again and again. Sounds easy right? Well not necessarily. There are millions of people just like you that are trying to establish a web presence by registering their own little piece of cyberspace.

So, how do you find a good cheap domain name that fits all the criteria discussed above? Sometimes it will take hours to sift through the names, or sometimes by the luck of the draw a domain name that someone else has previously purchased has expired. What makes this task even more daunting are the speculators. Just like in real estate, where there isn’t an endless supply of property, there is not an infinite amount of cyberspace especially in the top level domains such as .com, .biz, .net or .org. These speculators hoard internet domain names, and attempt to sell them at a profit. Some make a great living purchasing cheap domain names, and sell these domains they registered at hundreds, if not thousands of times the original purchase price. You need to focus on simplicity, have a brainstorming session, think about your site, think about what you’re attempting to accomplish, and the theme of your website. You can be creative with your name, and sometimes out of necessity you may have to substitute words and numbers such as the number 4 instead of the word “for”. Short forms for words work as well such as “u” instead of the word “you”. Just remember keep it simple, watch out for getting too involved in text lingo, unless of course that is your target market. Another caveat, be careful of double letters in multi-word domains. For instance www.domainpricesslashed.com has the double letter “s” in it. It can confuse potential visitors to the site. It was an acceptable domain for me, since the word “slashed” is such an attention getter. Just remember this - when anyone types in a domain name - .com is almost automatic.

After you have brainstormed your list of possible domain names to register, find yourself a reputable domain registration service. Once you find a domain registration service you are happy with, start trying the domains, one at a time to see which domain names are available. Some of the so called experts say you should, if you can register all the top level domains with your name. For example, if you attempt to register www.incomeblizzard.com , you would register all the other domains as previously mentioned (.net, .org, .biz). This will ensure a lock on the market and the speculators would be locked out, preventing them from receiving any spillover traffic that was meant for your site. This leads to another issue. My site, www.domainpricesslashed.com, anyone can register any deviation of the name, or miss-spelling, in hopes to steal traffic. The bottom line, be protective of your domain, and always try to register as many combinations as you can.

I have been scouring the web for ideas on how to make money at home. I haven't had very much luck, spending hours and hours looking and researching, trying to find genuine ideas instead of money grabbing scams. I have now turned my basement into a small aviary. I have a love for birds, and an opportunity arose that allowed me to take this small step. I have 2 breeding pair of birds, a pair of yellow sided green cheeks, as well as for lack of a better word, normal green cheeked conures. I do have a blog about what I intend on doing and how it will progress along. Time is of the essence, and a valuable commodity

So, its been a few months since anything has been posted on the blog, and it is to be expected that there has been no new revenue to report. Like a garden that is neglected, it is obvious that without fresh content, and constant attention a blog can die a quick death.

To be honest, I have spent the last several weeks just trying to recover from the holidays, and a job that schedule changes constantly from week to week. Sleep scheduling, family time and just general time to let my mind wander the web, has become difficult. I have been frustrated in trying to make the time to devote to this blog, and re-examine various ways to make money online. Can it be done, of course it can. I have make some very small steps and have made some small amounts of income, the next step is to increase the amount of income derived, or to duplicate the whole process over and over again, or maybe there is a whole new method of generating income.

I have spent many hours scouring the internet for secondary market information for several clients, now it is a matter of taking those skills and applying them to what I need. As a side note, clients pay much better...they 50% up front. If I could figure out how to do this work and pay myself upfront, that would be ideal. Any ideas??

It's a work in progress. So is this blog.

Whew! The holiday season is all wrapped up. I survived this year, as well as my family, but my wallet sure took a big hit yet again. Now it's time to focus and get back to work for 2007.

I have a few goals this year like everyone else. First and foremost I have to get those nasty credit card bills paid off. I have made a decision that unless I have the cash to pay for it, I'm not buying. Sure I will lose the air miles, the petro points, the pc points and any other point program I have joined over the years, but my sanity and security is worth it. If you like me, your credit limits have gone through the roof, and have made it so easy for me to whip out the card, and justify the purchase later. Then the bills come in and you start bargaining how your going to pay off the bill.

Don't just make the minimum payment. At that rate it will take you upwards of 42 years to pay off those purchases you just made. My plan? The a similar plan I taught new homeowners when I sold them their homes. I taught them to turn a 25 year mortgage, to just over 15 years.

Bi-weekly payments will ad up quickly, and save interest. I will make sure that 1 payment lands when the payment is due (making sure it is at least the interest due plus the payment), and the second two weeks after. Any extra money payed on the card early will save me money, and help me pay off the cards faster.

I will also try to get the interest rate charged on the cards reduced. Having the interest rate changed on a card that your paying 22% and having it dropped to 10% or in some instances 2.99% can save you hundreds of dollars.

Time to get to work.

Not a Get Rich Quick Scheme

Affiliate programs are a very easy first choice for newcomers to make money online. Just about everyone who is trying to make money online starts here simply because of how easy it is.

1. All you have to do is to join a merchant program as an affiliate and send visitors to the merchant site, free of charge of course. Why should you be paying anyone to sell their product for them? Anyone asking you for money upfront, I would stay away from.

2. Once your visitor has been sent to the affiliate site, all other work such as making a sale, delivering the product or service, receiving payment, handling the complaints or refunds, is all handled by the merchant site.

3. The merchant site also handles the payment of commissions that are to be paid to you when ever a sale is made because the visitor you sent to the merchant site has purchased a product from them.

4. You can also make commissions if a visitor you referred to the site joins the affiliate program, and they make a sale. This is known as a two tier system. You should investigate these systems closely, because there is a fine line between affiliate programs and multi-level marketing schemes or scams, you can choose the appropriate word.

Does Adsense Make Any Cents?

By knowing what the most expensive keywords on the internet are, you can create websites, blogs and web pages based on these keywords. On these sites and pages, Google can serve expensive ads that match the content of the sites (based on your keywords) and you could promote affiliate offers that reap high bounties when visitors click on the ads or purchase the products that you are promoting.

The challenge lies in driving traffic to these sites. One way to drive traffic is through search engine optimization, whereby you create a website that ranks highly on the search engines and receive free traffic. This can be tricky and very time consuming. Or, if you already have an existing well-ranked site, you can create new pages linked from your existing pages. This is a little more difficult to accomplish since the pages you are creating may not have anything to do with your original site. A second way to drive traffic is through online advertising.

With regards to online advertising, one key is to understand correlations between keywords. By determining correlations between inexpensive and expensive keywords, you can advertise on the inexpensive keyword (via pay-per-click (PPC) advertising on search engines) to drive traffic to your website that serves ads based on expensive keywords. For instance, advertising on the keyword painting ($0.20 keyword), and sending visitors to your site about the related topic home remodeling ($2.00 keyword) allows you to profit from the wide spread between the keyword prices of the two correlated keywords. This is known as keyword arbitrage. The spread between the two words is your profit. Sounds simple enough, but picking the wrong keyword, can end up costing you a lot of money. For example, I ran a small campaign, spending $25.00. My keyword bids ranged from $.05 to $.011 cents per click. I set the max daily budget at $7.00. Within 3.5 days my budget was gone. The results….I made $7.64. What happened? I used the wrong keywords, I generated 300 clicks from the cheaper words, but the traffic still wasn’t qualified enough. There wasn’t a strong enough correlation between the 2 keywords.

There are two other ways to profit from knowing the most expensive keywords. The first doesn't even require you to own or operate a website. In this method, you advertise using inexpensive means (e.g., via pay-per-click advertising on inexpensive keywords or CPM advertising) and direct traffic to high paying affiliate offers.

The second method is to set up your own search engine. There are several companies that allow you to easily set up a search engine that serves PPC ads syndicated from Google, Overture or other PPC search engine networks. Once you create your engine, you can drive traffic directly to your PPC results, and get paid every time someone clicks on one of the results. Likewise, on your search engine's home page, you can include many links to expensive keywords, so that when someone clicks on it, the engine shows expensive ads based on those keywords.

Understanding keyword pricing is critical to the online advertising, PPC search engine and affiliate marketing businesses, businesses that combine for over $25 billion a year in revenues. With a market of this size, generating substantial profits, if you have the right information, is really not that challenging. I just want a small percentage of this, don’t you?

In the past advertising revenue was reserved for those sites with large amounts of traffic, now even teenagers like my son are making a quick buck with their online hobby blogs, talking about movies, music, and video games. People also place adsense advertising on their online family photo albums, their blogs and their business sites all the time, even with a small amount of traffic, you could end up having your web hosting costs paid for. With blogs, you don’t even have those costs to consider. Sites like blogger don’t charge for hosting. What could be better than that? Nothing better than an opportunity to make money free, only investing your time doing something you love.

Adsense has revolutionized the world of paid advertising. In the past cheesy, ugly, insert your negative adjective here banner advertising littered every website, as site owners attempted to monetize their site. Google Adsense is very different; it can blend in and compliment your site with ads that are built around the topic on the page, making the ads targeted to your reader. Income is derived from the number of clicks generated from the visitors, giving the site/blog owner an unlimited income potential. Keyword prices or payouts to the site owner can be particularly lucrative, even if there are only a few ads on the site.

Google adsense has dominated the web; with the opportunity to generate passive income, with little work on the website/blog, more and more people are jumping on the adsense bandwagon, and using Google adsense to generate money. Some of the highest earners manage to attract enough visitors with quality content to easily make thousands of dollars each and every month, just from using adsense alone! I am slowly starting to generate regular monthly income from this blog. This is definitely not a get rich quick scheme. It takes a lot of dedication, many postings, and quality posts.

One of the other benefits of adsense, is fact that anyone can apply to use Google adsense for free. Signing up for blogger has made it even easier, since it is owned by Google itself. These two facts have caused millions and millions of people to sign up. This allowed Google to extend their web presence to millions if not billions of websites and it now generates millions of dollars in advertising revenue for Google.

One of the driving forces behind Google Adsense is its signifigance to each and every page on the blog/website; the program scans the page and looks up keywords appearing in the website copy and automatically displays relevant ads. This increases the chances of people clicking through the results are very targeted ads in front of very qualified traffic. What does that mean to the blogger/website owner? It means they have the opportunity to put more money in their pocket not to mention putting more money in Google’s pocket.

Many of the so called web gurus are multiplying their income by operating several blogs / websites and attempting to attract as many targeted visitors as possible using high quality niche articles. Once the sites are fine tuned with good content and quality keywords, they can be left alone, but still keep on generating income each and every day. Occasional updates can keep the sites fresh, and help search engine placement.

It is no surprise Google adsense is the most widely used form of advertising; they have created a “pay-per-click” program where advertisers do not pay for ads that are not clicked on by visitors, and website owners are paid more for each click than they would if the system were based on the number of people viewing those ugly banner ads.

All in all Google adsense has developed itself into a powerful tool, used by the masses. There are imitators that are popping up everywhere. Azoogle is another company that is offering pay per click advertising. I have set up an account and I will be comparing the two programs over the next few months. I have heard many great things about them, and I am very anxious to see the results.

Free in this case is NOT good

Free in this case is NOT good. I know in the few articles that I have posted, I pretty much have made it clear that free is good. No so. Let me explain, about a month ago I signed up for a free adsense site. They offered me hundreds of free keyword rich sites, if I paid monthly hosting fees. Well as I always say free is good. One big problem. The more time I spend investigating the html code, the more problems there are. There are missing links, miss labelled webpages, no keywords in the coding, no meta tags, nothing that would optimize these pages for search engines. The also offer hundreds of dollar of free advertising. All the free advertising they offer is based on the condition of making additional deposits on the accounts. For instance if I were to deposit say $50.00 on the one account( I will not name the pay per search programs because they haven't done anything wrong) Then they would subsidize my account with an additional $25.00. Sounds great, sounds like they are earning some kind of kick back on that, but I can't be sure. All I know, as soon as possible, I am canceling the hosting, and going elsewhere. My parents always remind me that you get what you pay for. I guess they are right. My advice, stay away from these so called free websites, unless you have days of free time to optimizing each page, which works out to about 32,000 pages. It would be a good opportunity if the websites were accurate and complete, but they are not. Do I sound bitter, maybe, but they are getting rich and taking advantage of the little guys trying to make an honest buck. Just think if 1000 of us take them up on their offer, take the free site, and just pay for the hosting each and every month, they are making almost $10,000 each and every month. I'm not prepared to add to their pockets, for an inferior product. Even if it is free.

Finding a needle in a haystack

What this have to do with making money online? It's a very simple analogy. This blog is the needle in the haystack otherwise known as the internet. The question is how do you get people to find your blog or website in the millions upon millions of sites that are out there. That is the billion dollar question, or in my case I will settle for $100,000 every year. Not asking for much am I?
Think of it this way, there is no sense in creating keyword rich sites, with adsense or other forms of pay per click advertising if no one is ever seeing it to click on it. Your not going to make one red cent unless of course someone accidently clicks on your link. So what can we do to make the haystack smaller or the needle much much bigger?

We need to generate traffic. There are basically 3 way of generating traffic. Buying it, trading it, or generating it for free. Remember....Free is good!!

Free Traffic - Something from nothing

1) Register your url with search engines. This can be time consuming finding all the search engines, then filling out information, your url, general description, keywords, etc. With hundreds of search engines out there, this can take hours, unless of course you find yourself some software to do the work for you. Learn everything you can about your topic, get immersed in the topic then become proficient and write and post many articles on your website, blogs, and then post those articles on sites for others to copy and paste as content on their sites. Short, concise articles tend to be keyword rich. Search engines love them, and so people who are using those articles to generate income.

3)Read other blogs on your topic. Get some ideas what others are talking about it, and improve on what they are saying. Add positive comments on blogs and forums, try to create a good conversation, and make sure that your site url is included in the comment. Others that will read your comment may click on your link, to check out what you have on your site. Free traffic. Another tip is to email the writer of the blog/forum and ask for a reciprical link. Nicely ask them if they will link to your site, if you place a link on your site linking back to them. Once again, Free traffic. Try to stick to blogs that are closely linked to your topic, you may generate some great traffic, and you may have repeat viewers.
